REGULATORS

Regulators are the key equipment you need. And which model, with which features you choose, should depend on the diving you plan to do.

COMPUTERS

Computers have become reliable and sophisticated. They're not cheap, but for the safety and convenience the provide, very affordable. They absolutely should be part of every diver's set of gear. But be aware, it's easy to be 'oversold' on functions that you'll never need.

BUOYANCY COMPENSATORS

The BC is an integral piece of equipment, in fact, it's purpose and benefit is more than just providing buoyancy. There are three main types of BC: the Jacket style, the Back Inflate, and the Harness & Wing. Which one you choose in directly related to the kind of diving you intend to do.

MASKS

For the diver, the mask is a very personal item. And it's one of the most important pieces of gear in terms of making or breaking a stress free dive. Dive masks need to be chosen on two primary characteristics. First, the fit to the diver's face, making an airtight seal without needing a very tight strap. And second the softness and suppleness of the mask skirt, for comfort.

FINS

Diving really doesn't happen without fins. And for the diver, to produce an efficient and propulsive kick, the fins need to be considered carefully. There are two primary types of fins: Blade Fins, and Split Fins. There are pros and cons to both. But in the end, the choice should be made based on the type of environment and the type of diving the diver is participating in.

ACCESSORY EQUIPMENT

Outside of the major pieces of scuba gear that everyone has in their bag, there will be other small items that divers will invest in, depending on their diving interests. Often the diver will add additional gear as needed. Which is a prudent method, choosing gear as the diver gains experience.

EXPOSURE PROTECTION

Divers do need protection. They need protection in water for two fundamental reasons: First, to aid the diver in maintaining a comfortable body temperature. Second, to protect the diver from injury that could occur due to inadvertent bumping or rubbing up against aquatic life and hard structures such as rocks and wrecks. The choice of what exposure protection a diver needs, will depend on the type of diving and locations that the diver will find themselves in.
